Introduction

by Mary Klein Diederich

My husband Bill and I have been working on and off for more than 35 years on this history of the Klein families of Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. It's a project that my father Joseph Ferdinand Klein started in the mid 1950's and it has become our hobby.

Over the years, we've gathered information from uncles, aunt and cousins. Anita Kultgen Becker and Bea Wester Krier have been particularly helpful.

We've researched the vital records and land deeds at the courthouses in Port Washington, Sheboygan, West Bend and Milwaukee. We've examined the old parish registers of Holy Cross and St. Mary am See at Lake Church. We've transcribed gravestone inscriptions in cemeteries at Holy Cross, Lake Church, Dacada and Port Washington. We've searched census records, newspaper files, microfilm and other sources at the Wisconsin State Historical Society at Madison. We've spent days at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. and hours at the State Archives of Luxembourg.

This on-line family history is the result of all this effort. And there's more to come. This is only a preliminary edition. It is by no means complete.
